What the CPM? A guide to Acronyms.

Because it’s Christmas and I love it.

A guide to understanding digital marketing abbreviations.

A fast and easy to understand grouping of all those letters in digital marketing that make no sense until you get your hands on something like this! (CPM? Who knew?!)

Impression

While it’s always good to make a first impression, in the world of advertising an impression means how many times a piece of content (usually an ad) is viewed or displayed online.

For example - 100,000 impressions on a Facebook Ad would mean that this particular ad was served 100,000 times onto a screen that was loading Facebook or one of it’s other advertising platforms.

CPM - Cost per Mille

In French, Latin and Italian “Mille” refers to the number one thousand, and when used in the context of digital advertising it means, the cost per one thousand views (impressions) of an ad.

Eg: CPM = $100 in translation  $100 per 1,000 impressions

Click or Clicks

Defined by Google simply as,

“A click is generally an action that brings the potential customer to a landing page.”

Enough said!

CTR - Click Through Rate

I live and die by CTR, a high CTR = Success, a low CTR = bad news.

CTR is calculated by dividing the number of clicks your ad receives by the number of impressions your ad has had.

For example, if an ad has 500 clicks, and has 1,000 impressions, the CTR is 5%

That’s 500 clicks divided by 1,000 impressions. Yes! Math! UGH. (not an acronym)

Google explains more.

CPC - Cost Per Click

A measurement of how much a “click” on an ad costs based on IMPRESSIONS and CTR.

Now you’ve got the lingo time to use it!
